The Intelligence Behind the Pitch: AI at FIFA World Cup 2026

The Intelligence Behind the Pitch AI at FIFA World Cup 2026

Enjoy this blog as an interactive podcast!

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is officially set to be the most technologically advanced sporting event in history. For the first time, 48 teams will compete across three nations (USA, Canada, and Mexico) in 104 matches. To manage this unprecedented scale, FIFA has integrated Artificial Intelligence into the very fabric of the tournament—from the split-second decisions of referees to the palm of every fan’s hand.

Here is how AI is redefining the “Beautiful Game” in 2026.

Precision Officiating: The Rise of 3D Avatars

Building on the semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) used in Qatar 2022, the 2026 tournament introduces AI-enabled 3D player avatars.

⭐ 1.0 Second Scan: During pre-tournament shoots, all 1,248 players (26-man squads for 48 teams) were digitally scanned. Each scan takes just one second to capture precise body-part dimensions.

⭐ 10,000 Data Points: The updated SAOT system tracks up to 10,000 data points per player. By using personalized 3D models rather than generic skeletons, the AI can account for a player’s specific limb length and physique, making offside calls more “forensic” than ever before.

⭐ The “Trionda” Ball: The official match ball contains a 500 Hz motion sensor chip, sending data 500 times per second to the VAR hub to detect the exact moment of impact.

“Football AI Pro”: Leveling the Playing Field

One of the most significant shifts this year is the democratization of data. FIFA and Lenovo launched Football AI Pro, a generative AI knowledge assistant built on a specialized “Football Language Model.”

⭐ Tournament-Wide Intelligence: The tool analyzes hundreds of millions of data points to provide all 48 teams—regardless of their individual budget—with advanced tactical insights, video breakdowns, and 3D visualizations.

⭐ Pre- and Post-Match Analysis: While not used during live play, coaches use the AI to simulate thousands of scenarios, identifying opponent weaknesses and predicting fatigue patterns to prevent injuries.

A New Lens for Fans: “Referee View” 2.0

In 2026, the broadcast experience has moved from the sidelines to the center of the pitch. The new Referee View uses AI-powered stabilization software to fix a long-standing issue: shaky body-cam footage.

⭐ Real-Time Smoothing: The AI removes motion blur in real time, allowing a global audience of 6 billion viewers to see exactly what the referee sees during high-tension moments like VAR reviews or penalty shouts.

⭐ Immersive Stats: AI-driven overlays now provide live probability metrics, such as “Expected Goals” (xG) and “Sprinting Speed,” updated instantly on screen using edge-computing servers located within each of the 16 host stadiums.

Smart Stadiums and Sentiment Tracking

Behind the scenes, AI is the “invisible manager” of the tournament’s massive logistics.

The Future is Now

As FIFA President Gianni Infantino noted, the 2026 World Cup is essentially “104 Super Bowls” rolled into one. Without AI, managing the sheer volume of data and human movement would be impossible. By blending raw athletic talent with high-tech precision, the 2026 World Cup isn’t just a tournament; it’s a blueprint for the future of global entertainment.
